Let there be light: New light laboratory opens in Wolfsburg

The subject of light "in" and "on" the vehicle has taken on enormous significance in recent years and is now an integral element of the vehicle development process.

This has prompted EDAG to set up a light laboratory at the Wolfsburg site which will allow developers not only to map light technology components virtually and to create prototypes, but also to test their operability in trials.

The team at the new light laboratory – headed up by Klaus Zander, team leader for light technology and simulation – provides extensive services in the fields of luminance captures, spectrometer measurements, reflection measurements and transmission measurements, and even mobile measurements of illumination levels.

"The opening of the light laboratory shows that things at EDAG – and particularly here at the Wolfsburg site – are thriving and will continue to thrive in the future," said Willi Schwarz, construction development division manager, at the opening ceremony on 16 June 2015 in Wolfsburg. "The next few months will see the development of the new EDAG site at the VW Autostadt "city" in Wolfsburg-Warmenau. Over 900 employees from the field of vehicle and production facility development will be moving into the new EDAG development centre, which measures 22,000 sqm, by the end of the year. Another building, measuring 6500 sqm, on the same site will house the technical centre, including our new light laboratory. This will enable us to further expand our specific range of services in the field of light technology."
